While not a surprise, Florida offensive lineman Bobby Hart has committed to Florida State.
St. Augustine safety Renaldo Thomas has committed to Tulane. Thomas has very good size at 6’3″ 200 pounds and a high ceiling. However, he is very raw. Thomas reported offers from Arkansas, Michigan, Oklahoma State, and Houston. If true, then Tulane did a really great job of recruiting Thomas.
Mississippi athlete Donte Moncrief has committed to Ole Miss.
Athens, AL quarterback Stephen Rivers will be attending LSU’s camp in hopes of earning an offer. Rivers seems excited about the possibility of receiving an offer from LSU. We’ll see what happens. I spoke briefly about Rivers and posted some of his film in my last update.
Catholic High School’s Zack Oliver is also expected to be at camp again.
Here are some more names to watch at camp:
I spoke about the defensive backs that will be in attendance in my last post. In addition to David Jenkins and Floyd Raven, White Castle’s Ronald Martin will also be out there trying to earn an offer. Martin is likely a safety at the next level. Benton High School’s T.K. Fleming will also be on hand.
A trio of players from Valdosta high School in Valdosta, GA will be on hand and we could see something happen with them. Defensive back Malcolm Mitchell, defensive end Jarquez Samuel, and linebacker Justin Williams will all be on hand. All claim offers from LSU. Mitchell is the big prize of the three and has numerous big-time offers. Samuel and Williams do not have many quality offers; however, I’m personally pretty high on Samuel.
Some very familiar names will be on hand as well.
The following LSU commitments will be on hand: RB Kenny Hilliard (pictured), RB Jeremy Hill, RB Terrance Magee, WR Alonzo Lewis, WR Jarvis Landry, OL La’El Collins, OL Corey White, OL Trai Turner, DL Anthony Johnson, and DL Quentin Thomas
Some other players that LSU is heavily recruiting that will be on hand include OL Greg Robinson, WR Odell Beckham Jr., and DT Mickey Johnson. I do not expect anything to go down, in terms of a commitment, with any of those three this weekend. They all seem willing to be patient and let the process play out.
Ocean Springs, MS wide receiver Joseph Morrow will be on hand. Could we see something develop with him?
Ellender receiver Jermaine Johnson will be in attendance, and the 6’3″ 170 pound receiver will do everything he can to get noticed. Johnson could be competing with Morrow for a spot in LSU’s class.
West Monroe’s Chuck Hunter will be on hand to show his stuff as well.
Another name to watch is South Carolina fullback Jacob Baxter. With Dominique Allen’s indefinite suspensions, perhaps the staff will try to lock up Baxter.
For what it’s worth, Washington receiver Kasen Williams will be at the camp. Williams is highly rated by all of the recruiting services including a #1 wide receiver ranking by Scout.com. He has a ton of offers and who knows? Maybe he will fall in love with LSU while he is in town.
Looking way ahead to the Class of 2012, Breaux Bridge receiver Travin Dural and Karr offensive lineman Derick Edinburgh will both be on campus. Also, Houston, TX quarterback Matt Davis should be on hand. Davis is expected to be one of the best players in the state of Texas next year.
Not camp related, but South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney recently named LSU, Alabama, and South Carolina as his top three. Clowney is the consensus top prospect in the nation for the Class of 2011. If fellow South Carolina defensive lineman Sam Montgomery has a big year for LSU, could that persuade Clowney to take an even harder look at the Tigers? I had not given much credence to Clowney really considering LSU, but this warrants some attention.
My pick to click is West Monroe’s Paul Turner who should be working out at defensive back. Turner is an incredible athlete that looks like an impact player at the next level. He reminds me of a slightly shorter Morris Claiborne.
So what do I expect from camp?
– I think David Jenkins will commit to LSU
– I think Floyd Raven will earn an offer from LSU. If he does not commit at camp, he will do so before the end of the month.
– I think Ronald Martin will earn an offer from LSU and will commit.
Anthony Ranaudo is through pitching this summer in the Cape Cod league. Ranaudo started five games and threw over 29 innings without giving up an earned run. Ranaudo probably feels that he has proven all he needs to prove to the Boston Red Sox in order to justify the kind of money he is asking for. Time will tell whether the Red Sox will give Ranaudo what he wants. I would still be very leery of getting your hopes up of Ranaudo returning to LSU next year.
