LSU Baseball in the Polls/RPI, April 21

The Tigers rode a fantastic pitching outing from former walk-on Alden Cartwright to a 2-0 shutout of Ole Miss Sunday, cinching a critical series win on the road. Since that painful sweep at Florida, LSU is 7-2 in the SEC and alone at 2nd in the conference, behind Alabama & Florida’s twin 12-6 conference marks. After LSU at 10-7-1 in the West,  Ole Miss & Mississippi State both sit at 10-8. South Carolina in the East is also 10-8. LSU comes home to face Tennessee this weekend. The offense isn’t going to win many games by itself, but if the pitching can do what it did Sunday more often, that’ll certainly help LSU’s cause. But, is it ready to do that?

Alabama, while currently leading by 1.5 games over LSU, still has South Carolina, Florida, LSU & Mississippi State on the schedule. With such tough series’ still on tap, the SEC race is still wide open.

On to the polls (italics mean not yet released for this week):

Collegiate Baseball – 10 (LW:14)

Baseball America – 9 (LW:12)

Perfect Game USA 6 (LW:8)

Coaches Poll – LW:7

NCBWA – LW: 8

And the Tigers in the RPI, getting a nice bump for the series win over the Rebels:

Boyd’s World – 13 (LW:22)

Warren Nolan – 13 (LW:22)

A look at the entire conference, according to Boyd’s World. The top has spaced out more since we have a good amount of data across the board. LSU is now in the upper tier, while the teams at the top of the conference have dropped down some beyond Florida. After Tennessee at 25 there’s a precipitous drop to the 40s, which is border of the safe zone for NCAA tournament bids. Missouri has…had an unfortunate slide in the RPI this week:

1. Florida
6. South Carolina
8. Ole Miss
11. Kentucky
13. LSU
16. Vanderbilt
17. Alabama
25. Tennessee
42. Mississippi State
49. Georgia
51. Arkansas
57. Auburn
65. Texas A&M
121. Missouri
