The first major preseason poll has been released, the USA Today Coaches’ Poll brought to you by your friendly neighborhood pyramid scheme. In all, there are seven total SEC teams ranked throughout the top 25. The top overall team is Florida State, rightly so after winning last year’s title and returning the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.
Your LSU Tigers find themselves 13th, which is right about where most all observers (including myself) expected to find them. The first opponent, Wisconsin in Houston, is right behind at 14th. Full rankings – SEC teams bolded:
1. Florida State (56 1st-Place Votes)
3. Oklahoma (3)
4. Oregon (1)
6. Ohio State (1)
8. Michigan State
9. South Carolina (1…wait what?)
17. Notre Dame
18. Arizona State
19. Ole Miss
20. Texas A&M
21. Kansas State
23. North Carolina
LSU finds themselves behind four SEC teams & expectedly so. Alabama is the preseason favorite (even with a new offensive line & quarterback) and Auburn is right about where they should be coming off last season. UGA & South Carolina both look to be strong, but I could see LSU ranked ahead of the Gamecocks. Of the SEC teams ahead of LSU, none of them have more question marks than LSU & with the Tigers’ questions being at so many key offensive positions, it’s expected they’d slide behind more experienced groups.
That being said, I can’t ever seem to get too riled up by these preseason polls because they’re not remotely worth the pixels they’re viewed on. It’s a poll by whomever was in the SID office at the deadline to turn in.
Texas has no right to be in a preseason poll except for being Texas, which means they’re contractually obligated to be in every preseason poll. The top 10 looks to be pretty predictable. You can make a case for every team to be there and also pick out early front runners to be your yearly top 10 flameout (UCLA? Auburn?).
We’ve got our first morsels of real football things & that’s all that matters here.
